International Women’s Day 2023

The Future of Franchising is open to all

To celebrate International Women’s Day, we are looking for new ways to #EmbraceEquity and help women achieve self-sufficiency and financial freedom. “Franchising is the world’s best-kept secret,” said Tamara Loring, who leads the charge with brand ideology at The Entrepreneur’s Source. “We empower women to really reimagine and reclaim their lives and figure out a way to live the lifestyle of their dreams. Franchising allows females to see a pathway to be self-sufficient and generate the income they want.”

To further its commitment to female entrepreneurs, The Entrepreneur’s Source is sponsoring the Annual Leadership Conference hosted by the Women’s Franchising Committee at the International Franchise Association’s annual conference in Las Vegas. The event, which takes place on February 26 at 11:30 a.m., is moderated by Larisa Walega, Vice President of Marketing at Ziebart International Corp., and features several speakers, including Nicole Salla, chief marketing officer at Kiddie Academy.

Outlook Bright for Female Business Owners Women are leveling the playing field in the small business community. Females led 1.1 million small businesses in 2019, employing 10.1 million workers and earning a whopping $1.8 trillion, according to the latest numbers from the U.S. Small Business Administration. Younger generations are tackling business ownership with renewed vigor. Female members of Generation X are 23% more likely to be business owners than female millennials or baby boomers, according to a survey conducted by Guidant Financial.

Women have leadership roles at franchises across the country, including Huntington Learning Center, Wetzel’s Pretzels, Blaze Pizza, and Cousins Subs. At least 31% of all franchises are female-owned, and many women share franchise ownership with their spouses.

Benefits of Franchising for Women
Many women are struggling under the mental load of leading households and managing full-time careers. Despite strides in climbing the corporate ladder, women still shoulder the bulk of household duties. Tackling a thriving career and a family is leaving many women feeling overwhelmed. At least 38% of women are suffering from burnout, according to a survey of 17,000 mothers conducted by Motherly, an online resource for mothers. Franchising can help lighten the load. Franchising provides women with a turnkey business opportunity that allows them to call the shots and take charge of their future. For an initial investment, women receive the training, tools, and support they need to make the American dream attainable. Many franchise business models allow women to create their own schedules, grow at their own pace, and work from a home office. “Women are the ultimate multitaskers. We’re great at managing time and priorities. Franchising allows women to have it all. Women entrepreneurs seek collaboration, and the franchise community as a whole offers you the support you need to be the best business owner,” said Marissa Frois, The Entrepreneur’s Source Chief Executive. “Females are great leaders. They’re empathetic, natural caretakers and like to help others, which is a perfect recipe for franchising.”

Franchising’s Roots are Female
It’s not surprising that franchising has roots in female entrepreneurship. One of the earliest modern-day franchise businesses was a hair salon owned by a savvy female entrepreneur. Martha Matilda Harper, a Canadian-American with floor-length hair, opened her first Harper Method Shop in 1888 and started franchising the brand in 1891. All her salons were owned by women, and she offered training, branded products, field visits, advertising, and group insurance, to help the system grow. During its heyday, Harper had more than 500 salons, as well as a chain of training schools.
