How Important is Mindset When Working in Franchise Development?

People don’t often immediately think about franchise development as playing a role in a good cause, but if you consider what franchise development is at its core, the potential to make a positive impact is incredible and far-reaching.

In the franchising industry, we can help place someone into a business that will give them the structure, resources, and tools they need to build financial strength, gain work-life balance, create career opportunities for local people to work in a positive work environment, and give back to their communities.

Traditionally, however, we associate franchise development with driving hard sales in a way that feels very transactional. But often our own short-term franchise sales goals can hinder us from making a greater impact.

Our mindset has everything to do with the experience a client has with us.

When we view the interaction with the candidate as the potential to “make a franchise sale” or “close the deal” or “get them past the finish line,” we limit the true connection we can create with the individual.

If we take a moment to appreciate that this candidate has very specific reasons why they’re considering our business, however, we’ll remember that they’re not just another number in a long line of people to sift through — instead we feel privileged to be helping this candidate change the trajectory of their life, and the entire conversation becomes much more meaningful and “why” focused.

In the long run, we sleep well at night knowing we’ve done good by helping this candidate achieve their dreams of business ownership and by helping them take a massive step forward on their journey towards self-sufficiency and financial freedom.

Next time you’re working with a candidate, ask yourself: How do I see this individual? Are they a means to complete a necessary transaction to reach my personal goals? Or do I see this as a unique opportunity to make a true difference in this person’s life? Does that make me excited?
